St Mary the Virgin - Holystone
History
The present church is built on the foundations of the original Norman church of uncertain date. The church is named in parish records in 1577.
There was also a priory, founded about 1107 - 1124.
The Norman church was demolished by Rev'd Aislaby Proctor and present church was built using the Durham Architect, George Pickering, who also rebuilt St Michael and All Angels Alwintton some four years earlier.
The nave is built on the foundations of the Priory choir, and some of the original stonework remains.
Other than the Millennium Window (see Photo Album) the remaining stained glass was made by Wailes & Strang (1838 - 1860).
